TIMBERON DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL Minutes of the Meeting Held July 12, 2008 IN ATTENDANCE: Everett Putney B.F. He opened the meeting with a prayer and it was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. He asked if anyone would like the minutes read from the previous meeting. Jackie Fioretti gave a correction to the minutes as follows: the TWSD meeting held on the fourth Saturday of the month was for June only. Scott Millar made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected, seconded by Donna Millar and the corrected minutes were approved. Gwen Adams, Treasurer gave the treasurer’s report. A motion was made by Donna Millar to accept the report, seconded by Fran Trendler, and the Treasurer’s report was approved. Gwen gave the Independence Day finances and after a net expense of $524.80 there is $1,519.61 left in the budget for next year. Everett Putney asked if there were any bills to be paid. Bills pending totaled $1,115.98 for rental of tents used at Mary Glover Park, NMAM Assoc. annual dues, TDC bldg rent, hours spent on web page and renew computer virus scan program. Fran Trendler made a motion to pay our bills. Donna Millar seconded the motion and it was approved to pay our bills. Rick Merrick, Chairman of Independence Day Celebration gave his report. He said everything went very smoothly, and thanked all of the volunteers. The parking went well, the speeches were great, the music was good and we could have had a few more from the community to attend. He thanked B.F. Adams for donating the flag and flag pole in the Mary Glover Park. There was discussion on activities for next year. It was suggested there be a new committee next year and this year’s committee would give guidance. It was suggested we have a two day event and not hold it on July 4th. There will be a follow up meeting today after the TDC meeting. It was suggested we ask Otero County to provide permanent signs to show how to get to the Mary Glover Park and also to provide water in the park. Everett mentioned he has two permanent signs for each of the four parks and he needs help installing these signs. Maintenance of the restrooms in Mary Glover Park was discussed. B.F. Adams made a motion to pay Sharon Wyatt $10.00 per month to clean the restrooms. Scott Millar seconded the motion and it was approved. Everett Putney mentioned Otero County is double chipping and sealing another mile on Sacramento Road and when it is completed, the county will finish the airstrip surface. There are weeds on the runway and the county will spray these one to two weeks prior to finishing the surface. The final surface will be black and then the county will come back and stripe the runway. Judy Underwood passed out a very nice sample brochure for Timberon. She is open to discussion for changes. If you have any suggestions for the brochure please call her. over Page 2 Everett advised he spoke with Fire Chief, Joe Wheeler and if all goes well they will burn the slash pits starting tomorrow (Sunday). Fire restrictions have been lifted. Everett mentioned he spoke with Eddie Tudor, State Forestry and grant money for tree thinning on private property will continue until October of this year. After October, it will be about one year before another grant is available through RC&D for thinning private property. Everett said he will have a meeting with Jim Ackermann and Rick Merrick to discuss plans on future tree thinning grants. Everett Putney advised the Timberon Development Council has been awarded a $46,783.08 Timberon Parks Fuel Reduction Grant to re-enter the parks and cut the trees up to twelve inches on approximately 59 acres. This grant is funded by the National Fire Plan through Bureau of Land Management Funds in cooperation with the New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC). Funding for this project starts July 1, 2008 and ends July 1, 2009. After discussion, Gwen Adams made a motion to accept the grant, seconded by Jack Doll, and the motion to accept the grant was approved. Everett will submit the 2008-2009 Wildfire Risk Reduction Grant Acknowledgement form to Joy Esparsen, NMAC. The Community Action Plan revision has been put on hold until September. There was discussion concerning guidelines for Colonia’s and it was mentioned Otero County has declared Timberon a Colonia. More on this later. Everett asked how the Angel Food Ministries was working? Gwen advised there is a notice on the bulletin board. After discussion it was determined it takes dedicated groups of people to organize this. Scott Millar advised the VFW new administrative year just started and they are looking for funds to support the kids in Cloudcroft for scholarships. The “Patriotic Art Competition” deadline is March 31st and gives a $10,000 Scholarship. The “Voice of Democracy” and “Patriotic Pen” deadline is November 1st. Peggy Bullard with the Timberon Ladies Extension Club advised Judy Underwood will be giving a computer slide show at their next meeting, July 17th at 11.00 am. Judy was hired in China for seven months to teach small children. Her slide show is on China. B.F. Adams made a motion to adjourn and Peggy Bullard seconded it. The motion passed. These meetings are held the second Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the Timberon Development Council Office, 1841 Sacramento Drive. They are open meetings and everyone is invited.
