TIMBERON DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL Minutes of the Meeting Held September 13, 2008 IN ATTENDANCE: Everett Putney Steve Griffith B.F. The meeting was opened with a prayer and followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Everett asked if anyone would like the minutes read from the previous meeting? Peg Bullard made a motion to accept the minutes as submitted and it was seconded by Donna Millar. The minutes were approved. Fran Trendler gave the treasurer’s report. A motion was made by Donna Millar to accept the report, seconded by Rick Merrick, and the Treasurer’s report was approved. Everett Putney asked if there were any bills to be paid. Bills pending totaled $553.88 which included the 2007 tax preparation, diesel for the tractor, one roll of stamps, 6 hours spent on the web page and four hours spent on the parks grant. Rick Merrick made a motion to pay our bills. Fran Trendler seconded the motion and it was approved to pay our bills. Farmer’s Market – There was discussion on this and a community garden. Perhaps growers outside the community could be invited to participate. We would need publicity. It is a viable idea but isn’t practical at this time. An appreciation dinner for those who helped on the Mary Glover Park and July Fourth activities was discussed. B. F. Adams made a motion to have a steak dinner on September 26th at 6:00pm and TDC will provide the steaks and everyone invited would bring a side dish. Fran Trendler seconded the motion and it passed. Invitations will be sent. There was discussion of putting a water meter that could be locked in Mary Glover Park. The procedure to do this would be for TWSD (Timberon Water and Sanitation District) to send a letter requesting this to Otero County. If a meter is attached, it would need to have the Otero county commissioners approval. A summer festival for 2009 was discussed. It was mentioned Cloudcroft will have a July Fourth event for the first time in 2009. After a lot of discussion, a committee was formed to brainstorm the opportunities and report at the next meeting. If you are interested in serving on this committee please call Rick Merrick. There will be an annual meeting of the South Central Mountain RC&D (Rural Conservation and Development) in Cloudcroft on September 25th. Everett, Jackie and Fran will attend. over Page 2 Judy Underwood gave a very good presentation on the web page. If you have any photos you would like to see on the web page, please get them to Judy. You can access the web page at timberondevelopmentcouncil.com or the easiest way is timberon.org. Judy advised she needed to purchase a template which would cost $65.00 in order to give her more flexibility on the new layout. Jack Doll made a motion to pay $65.00 for the template. It was seconded by B.F. Adams and the motion passed. Everyone thanked Judy for the nice job she is doing with the web site. Scott Millar advised the weather station has been working very well and he hasn’t spent any time on it lately. Our domain names are good for five years which, Scott donated to TDC. Our Microsoft One Care (Virus & System Protection will have to be renewed every December 31st. His VFW Web Site was voted the best web site for VFW. Thank you Scott for your donation. B.F. Adams advised he will soon have a quality DVD of “Putting on The Lips” edited by Burt Rubinowitz. The DVD will be $10.00 or $12.00 if mailed. The proceeds will go to the Timberon EMS. Call B.F. if you want to purchase one. Everett discussed the Timberon Parks Grant to remove trees from 8-12 inches in diameter. He advised there is a person in Alamogordo who has a mill and in the logging business and who might take the larger trees. He will pursue this. It was reported the ecological site has been cleared and is ready for thinning. A letter was sent to TWSD concerning TDC’s responsibility on the slash pits. The airstrip has been brushed and Otero County will put the final coat on which will be a black surface. They will also stripe it for us. A smiley face at the end of the airstrip would welcome pilots. The Colonia status and its benefits are still pending. The Timberon swimming pool was discussed. TWSD needs help in purchasing the chemicals. Work is being done on the lakes at the lodge. The present fishing lakes are breaking even. Costs for chemicals from a pool company were presented which were very high. The pricing of chemicals from COSTCO and SAM’s will be pursued. Everyone thanked Joan Schug for the great work she has been doing on the swimming pool. Scott Millar advised the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary have three youth scholarships this year. They are: “The Patriots Pen”, “Voice of Democracy” and “Patriotic Art”. After discussion and the qualifications were explained, Fran Trendler made a motion to donate $500.00 to the VFW to be used for their Youth Scholarship Programs. The motion was seconded by Peg Bullard and it was passed. There was discussion on ways TDC could generate revenue. There will be more on this later. Karen Martin donated a nice big watermelon for the drawing. Rick Merrick won the drawing. Fran Trendler made a motion to adjourn and Karen Martin seconded it. The motion passed. These meetings are held the second Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the Timberon Development Council Office, 1841 Sacramento Drive. They are open meetings and everyone is invited. Reminder!
