TIMBERON DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL Minutes of the Meeting Held March 13, 2010 IN ATTENDANCE: Everett Putney Fran Trendler Kent Huisingh Jane Huisingh Rick Merrick Gwen Adams Cal Tyler Mary Tyler Burt Rubinowitz Ron McCormick John Howell Rachel McCormick Jackie Fioretti The meeting was called to order by President Everett Putney at 10:00 AM. The Pledge of Allegiance was given by all and a prayer was given by Everett Putney. Everett asked if anyone wanted the minutes read from the last meeting. A motion was made by Burt Rubinowitz to accept the minutes. It was seconded by Kent Huisingh. The minutes were approved. A Treasurer’s report was given by Fran Trendler. A motion was made by Jane Huisingh and seconded by Gwen Adams to accept the report as given. Motion approved. Bills for February totaled $7.00. Kent Huisingh made a motion to pay our bills and Ron McCormick seconded it. Motion approved. The updated Timberon Development Council, Inc. Community Action Plan has been signed by everyone. Jackie Fioretti will make 20 copies. This document will be used when applying for grants. Rick Merrick advised the Fire Department Grant for the Sim Table was completed and sent in on time. Thanks to Rick Merrick and Fran Trendler in helping the Fire Department compile the grant. The Fire Department should hear by June if the grant was awarded to them. If it is, there will be technical support needed to run the equipment. John Howell, Kent Huisingh and Cal Tyler volunteered to help with the technical support. The TDC (Timberon Development Council) will sponsor a Fire Wise Workshop later this year. Rick Merrick advised we have received a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Grant in the amount of $23,500. This Grant included three projects: Produce the Buckwood Fire DVD, Thinning for the Fire Department Sub Station on High Meadows and Surcingle, and to clear cut more corners to eliminate safety hazards. After discussion, a motion was made by Ron McCormick to make Rick Merrick the Project Manager for this Grant. It was seconded by Kent Huisingh and the motion was approved. The bid solicitation packages and specs to thin the Fire Department Sub Station will be sent to the three contractors and will be handled by the Fire Chief. over Page 2 Jane Huisingh gave a report on her Western Days Committee for the 4th of July activities. Jane mentioned there was a meeting last night and all is going well. We do need more food venders and all food venders need a day pass from the health department. Rick Merrick advised a 16x16 portable stage is needed for the musicians etc. After discussion, Gwen Adams made a motion to research the building of a portable stage. Ron McCormick seconded the motion and it was approved. Rick Merrick advised our third Timberon Business Meeting will be held March 18, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Timberon Development Council Office. Fran Trendler said she sent 25 invitations to businesses in Timberon. A flyer will be put on the bulletin board outside the post office. Burt Rubinowitz advised economic development is in the Timberon Water and Sanitation District Statutes. There was a suggestion to have one of these meetings as a breakfast meeting at the B&B Restaurant. There was discussion that there needs to be a lot of promotion on these meetings. It needs to be in the paper and what these meetings are about. Everett Putney mentioned there is grant money available for Colonia’s Urban Development. Timberon is classified as a Colonia. This would cover water treatment, water lines and roads. Everett Putney read a letter Linda Lea composed to send to Dell City concerning providing cell telephone service in Timberon. Everyone attending the meeting today agreed to send this letter and it will be sent on TDC letterhead stationery. He also advised a new contract has been signed with Otero County for TDC to manage the Timberon Airport. He has been told TDC won’t have to pay the Airport Liability Insurance as it is covered under Otero County’s Umbrella Policy. Jackie Fioretti advised Bruce Clark would like to donate a parcel of land to the Timberon Development Council, Inc. This land is 1.03 acres on Cresta Loma. The 2009 property taxes of $35.05 and TWSD water standby fees of $180.00 have not been paid. After discussion and since Mr. Clark can claim the donation on his taxes, Fran Trendler made a motion to accept the property if the property taxes and water standby fees are paid. Bert Rubinowitz seconded the motion and it was approved. Jackie Fioretti will send him a letter. An e-mail was read from Gwen Adams to Jackie and Everett recommending we call the proposed spring celebration “Spring Thaw Celebration”. After discussion it was agreed to call it “Mountains in Bloom Celebration” with a meeting and pot luck. Gwen Adams made a motion to hold the May TDC meeting on Friday, May 7th at 6:00 p.m. at the TDC office. John Howell seconded the motion and it was approved. There was further discussion and Gwen Adams made a motion for TDC to provide the meat for the pot luck lunch on Saturday, May 8th from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Mary Glover Park. Jane Huisingh seconded the motion and it was approved. Rick Merrick volunteered to get the roast. It was suggested we have a jug for donations to help cover some of our expenses. Rachel McCormick announced the Timberon Volunteer Fire Department will have a “Pancake Breakfast” fund raiser on Saturday, April 3rd from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 am. The proceeds will benefit Timberon’s EMT and Volunteer Fire Department. Ron McCormick and Burt Rubinowitz explained how the water is provided for the fishing lakes and it was very informative. Page 3 Everett Putney announced the Forest Service is looking for youths 15 to 18 years old for jobs in the Cloudcroft, New Mexico area between June 7th and July 30th to support “Youth Conservation Corps”. The program pays $7.50 per hour up to 40 hours per week. The application deadline is March 22, 2010. Burt Rubinowitz made a motion to adjourn and Kent Huisingh seconded the motion. The motion was approved and the meeting adjourned approximately 11:55 am. Our next meeting will be April 10, 2010 at 10:00 at the TDC office located at 1841 Sacramento Drive.
