TIMBERON DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL, INC. MINUTES OF JANUARY 12, 2013 Attendance: Everett Putney, Jackie Fioretti, Rick Merrick, Shirley Holstrom , Jerry Epkea, Joe Watkins, Sally Watkins, Kent Huisingh, Nanette Thorell, Fran Trendler and Don Coburn. The meeting was called to order by President, Everett Putney at approximately 10:00 am. The pledge of allegiance was given by all and a prayer was offered by Everett Putney. Everett asked if anyone would like the minutes to the November, 2012 meeting be read? Rick Merrick made a motion for the Secretary’s minutes to be accepted as submitted. Kent Huisingh seconded the motion and it was approved. Fran Trendler gave the Treasurer’s report by giving the balance in the checking account and advised a more detailed report will be given at the next meeting. Shirley Holstrom made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report. Don Coburn seconded the motion and it was approved. Fran Trendler gave the Bills report which totaled $2,204.37. Shirley Holstrom made a motion to pay our bills which was seconded by Don Coburn and it passed. Communications: Rick advised we received correspondence from the Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce announcing there will be a Mardi Gras in February in Cloudcroft. Old Business: Rick Merrick gave us an update on the TDC (Timberon Development Council, Inc.) office new location. The new address is 1559 Sacramento, Ste. B and the new mailing address is P.O. Box 111, Timberon, New Mexico 88350. The telephone and internet service has been moved and the telephone number remains the same (575-987-2464). The Timberon Development Council thanks Larry Hanson for providing us with the new location to rent. In addition we thank Larry for his monthly donation to TDC. The Timberon weather station has also been moved to the new location and we thank B.F. Adams, Jerry Epkea and Kent Huisingh for the many hours spent on this endeavor. We also thank B.F. for all of his work on the weather station and Jerry for spending a lot of time working on the program. Two meetings have been held at the new office, a Blues & BBQ Festival meeting and a Brainstorming Committee meeting. A special thanks goes to the Bergstroms who have done a lot for the office and have brought in many historical items. Thanks to Nan Thorell who has made many improvements to our web site and added a new link to our Timberon Blues Festival web site. Rick reviewed the nine brainstorming items that were compiled at the meeting. These are items that TDC will be working on in the future. One item on the list is our 3rd Annual Timberon Fly-In. Bill and Bobbie Brown have volunteered to coordinate this for the third time and we thank them very much. The present plans are to have this in May 2013. Rick Merrick gave an update on the Blues & BBQ Festival. Nan Ladd is in charge of the sponsor letters which are ready to be mailed. Eight bands have been lined up and the Kat Crosby Band will be the head liner for Saturday. The sound system has been reserved and an MC has been chosen who is a song writer and has sponsored a song writing contest in El Paso, Texas. Advertising has been started and a budget of $8,000.00 is needed for the festival. The colleges still need to be contacted for advertising. Jackie Fioretti made a motion to spend up to $8,000.00 for TDC to sponsor the Timberon Blues & BBQ Festival in July, 2013. Shirley Holstrom seconded the motion and it was approved. The Welcome Wagon was discussed. We thank Gwen Adams for chairing this committee and all the work she is doing on it. We also thank Joan and Dave Eerkes for all the work they have done in 2012. Page 2 New Business: Everett Putney appointed the following Audit Committee to audit the 2012 finances: Don Coburn and Kent Huisingh. According to the bylaws this must be done in January. An office cleaning fee was discussed and it was decided to table this for the next meeting. Rick mentioned we have a new member of the Timberon Water & Sanitation Board with us today. Everyone congratulated Sally Watkins and we look forward to working with her. Everett Putney mentioned we have an opportunity we cannot pass up by forming a co-op. Rick Merrick gave a power point presentation he put together on possibilities of using timber for log storage sheds, gazebos, etc. It is very important that we collaborate with other businesses. Work needs to be done in looking into a 501c3 for profit and TDC forming a Timberon Forest Industry CO-OP. Jackie Fioretti made a motion to authorize Rick Merrick to look into the possibilities and requirements for TDC to form a co-op. Kent Huisingh seconded the motion and it was approved. Rick Merrick advised TDC has not found a secretary yet and made a motion for Jackie Fioretti to continue as Secretary Pro-Tem until we find one. Kent Huisingh seconded the motion and it was approved. Rick Merrick advised the block thinning program for 2012, which was 100% free for land owners adjacent to BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, was suspended last year due to a cancellation in funds. We now have available through the SCMRC&D (South Central Mountain Resource Conservation and Development) money to thin thirty acres. TDC needs to vote on a contractor to do this work. Rick advised he was looking at Kevin Kuene and Hungry Beaver to be the contractors but he hasn’t heard from Kevin. Rick mentioned he will look at Heather & Kelly and the Big Beaver to do the masticating on this project. Shirley Holstrom made a motion for the Hungry Beaver to be the contractor on this thirty acre project. Don Coburn seconded the motion and it was approved. Rick Merrick advised a BLM 20 communities grant is available. Mike Caggiano agreed to write the grant for TDC. Rick Merrick made a motion for Mike Caggiano to write a BLM 20 communities grant in the amount of $50,000 for hazardous tree removal and $10,000 for community outreach for the Timberon Development Council, Inc. Shirley Holstrom seconded the motion and it was approved. It was mentioned thieves are poaching juniper and grey back firewood in Timberon. We know who they are and if you see this happening you need to call law enforcement and let them know about it. We cannot allow this in Timberon. Fran Trendler made a motion to adjourn and Kent Huisingh seconded the motion and it passed. The meeting adjourned at approximately 12:30 pm.
